Warts

True warts are common, contagious benign, skin tumors, “bumps”, or “growths” which are caused by at least thirty-five different viruses (human pappilloma virus). Caution should be used, because some warts can turn to cancerous tumors if not treated and eliminated.

Symptoms: Warts may occur singly or in clusters. Their appearance and size varies tremendously depending on where they erupt on the body and the degree of irritation they receive through daily wear.

The most common wart (verracae vulgaris) is a well-defined, rough surfaced, roundish, or irregular growth, firm to the touch and appearing on the knees, elbows, fingers, face and scalp. Periungual warts occur around the nail beds, plantar warts occur on the soles of the foot, and often appear flattened due to the pressure of walking on them. They may be painful, but this does not indicate anything serious. Warts that appear on a stalk (pedunculated) are common around the neck, chest, face, scalp, and armpits. Without treatment warts may continue for years or reoccur at the same or different parts of the body.

Immune functioning has something to do with the healing and immunity to future warts. Immune suppressed individuals are much more susceptible to a wide variety of viral infections, such as warts.

• Laser Surgery: This procedure utilizes an intense beam of light (laser) to burn and destroy wart tissue. It may be used for warts that are difficult to treat.
