Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition the presents as radiating pain from the back of the buttock down into the lower extremity (leg) usually in the back and lateral side. It presents pain referred along the path of the Sciatic nerve and its branches. Symptoms can include pain that is burning, tingling, stabbing, acing anywhere along the sciatic nerve (from the buttock, down the leg, into the foot, although he most commonly affected areas are the buttock and the thigh). In some cases the pain may be associated with weakness and can be recurrent unless the cause is found and treated.

There is a distinction between sciatic neuralgia and sciatic neuritis. Neuritis is an active inflammatory process where whereas neuralgia is an irritation of the nerve often resulting from outside mechanisms (disk, bone, muscle, trigger points). Although different causes initially the treatment involves a similar approach. Diet nutrients, herbs and homeopathies are always helpful, although manipulation and exercise can improve the outcome.
