Periodontal Disease

Periodontal conditions involve the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. These include: the periodontium made up of the gingival [gums], the supporting ligaments [periodontal ligament], the bone the teeth are set in [alveolar bone] and tissue that connects these structures [cementum].

The initial and most common form of periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis, which can actually be acute (short-lived) or chronic (ongoing or recurrent). If gingivitis goes untreated increased inflammation will proceed involving more tissue, such as the membranes ground the base of the teeth and erosion and degeneration of the underlying bone. This is then called Periodontitis and is a major cause of bone loss in adults resulting in loose shifting teeth and possible the loss of teeth.

Symptoms: red and inflamed gums that bleed easily when exposed to flossing or brushing the teeth, or eating hard course foods such as apples or raw vegetables. Pain is usually absent.

Occurrence: Mostly prevalent in people with poor oral hygiene (poor habits of oral flossing and brushing with a buildup of bacterial plaque). This plaque is composed of sticky deposits made of mucous and microorganisms (bacteria) that grow and adhere to carbohydrate residues left on the teeth due to insufficient cleaning habits. This condition can increase during puberty and pregnancy which may be secondary to hormonal factors or increased needs for folic acid, B vitamins, or minerals during these periods.

Risk Factors: Problems with biting surface (malocclusion), breathing through the mouth, food impaction between teeth, nutrient deficiencies especially folic acid and vitamin B complex (Pro B Complex), eating low giber foods and insufficient flossing. Birth control pills increase the body’s requirements for folic acid increasing the risk of getting gingivitis. Smokers are 4x’s more likely to suffer periodontal disease than non-smokers. Periodontal disease may be caused by insufficient calcium in the diet or stressor foods that rob it from the body, and cause other mineral deficiencies such as magnesium and zinc.
Gingivitis may be one of the first signs that there is an underlying problem such as: diabetes, leukemia, heavy metal toxicity, lower immune resistance, allergies, or vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Consult your dentist for evaluation and treatment. Depending on severity treatment may include cleaning or possible removal of damaged tissue (surgery).
